What are the Merchant Category Codes & why we are using it?

A merchant category code, or MCC, is a four-digit number that is used to put businesses into groups based on the goods and services they sell. The MCC is where the merchant does most of his or her business. Some businesses may have more than one MCC that fits, but the main one is usually the one that represents the most of their business. MCC codes are often used to figure out how risky a merchant is, which can affect underwriting, approval, and the rates the merchant gets. Card issuers also use MCC codes to figure out what rewards are right for a certain type of business. ISO 18245 is the standard that is used to define MCCs.
